Tom & Sarah - I'm Still Wishing (A Mashup)

Tom & Sarah - I'm Still Wishing (A Mashup)

Tom Waits' song "I'm Still Here" (from the album Alice), meeting the song "Your Wish Is My Wish" by Sarah Slean from the album Day One. In this mashup, created in 2006, Tom's piano provides the accompaniment for Sarah's vocals. They blend together as Tom and Sarah both croon "I'm Still Here."

I believed I worked on this in Adobe Audition / Cool Edit Pro, and can hear the snips and harsh cuts and odd blending between lines. Pitch-shifting Tom's vocals downs was necessary to get into the same key as Sarah, which gives his voice an extra-deep timbre. The general flow has both a lovely meshing and a discordant, out-of-key dissonance.

I sent the lovely Ms. Slean this note in 2007:

"Hi Sarah,

My spidey senses tell me you probably have a bit of a musical crush on
Mr. Tom Waits. Besides the brilliantly-incorporated influences in your
music, I'm pretty sure you said something about wanting to make out
with the dude in an interview I read in FFWD magazine this summer.

Anyway, I love your music, and I love HIS music, and I've always
thought, "Hey, Waits and Slean, what fabulous mash-up material." So I
took some time in January to see if I could make it happen. At first,
I thought I'd be mixing "The Score" with something off Blood Money,
but it turns out, I pretty much made you guys sing a lovely duet
instead.

I took Waits' "I'm Still Here" (from Alice) and introduced it to your
gorgeous track, "Your Wish is My Wish." The result is a song I call
"I'm Still Wishing," by Tom & Sarah. It might take a few listens to
adapt your ears to the awkward new rhythm your song is trying to pull
off, but hopefully it'll eventually make sense.

I'll resist the urge to give you a billion more disclaimers, and
simply say that I hope you enjoy this remix attempt. You can find the
track here: (link)

By the way, my wife and I loved your performances at the Calgary Folk
Fest. You rocked the mainstage, and your cabaret collaboration with
Hawksley and the gang was a work of art."

She sent me a note in response:

Heavens.
We loved that little gem here at The Baroness Inc.
aren't you a creative lad!
Thanks for the day-brightener...
Curtsy,
Sarah Slean

Anyway – an amateur mash-up-ist creates a meeting of the minds of Slean & Waits. It's kinda lovely.
